I was driving to school a week ago and my windshield wipers were working. I turned them off then about 5 min later went to turn them on and nothing happened. They continued not to work the rest of the way to school about 20 min I spent the day at school and when I came out to my truck that night they worked again! Wiper pivot nuts are loose. The wiper arms are connected to the wiper transmission by a nut on a pivot. The pivots are usually splined with a stud protruding. The wiper arms are splined as well and have a hole through the base. A nut tightens onto the pivot stud to hold the wiper arm tightly to the pivot.I have a YJ and the intermittent wipers don't work I replaced the moter several months ago and just relaced the switch still no intermittent and it will not "park " the wipers to one side just where ever they are turned off any suggestions?
Since the motor and control switch are new, the trouble should be the intermittent wiper delay module. There is a variable resistor in the wiper switch that sets the timing for the delay. You have a new switch presumably for an intermittent wiper systemso the resistor should be working.
There is a test for the solid state module unless you simply want to try another one. There are non-intermittent and intermittent type systems and switches used in the Model 81 YJ Wrangler. When your wipers stop working, and you can hear the wiper motor running. The problem is most likely a disconnected wiper motor link arm.
Refitting the link arm is usually a simple process. A windshield wiper system that you can rely on is crucial, as you know only too well. Wipers like head lights are mission critical bits of kit.
A typical wiper system consists of :. All these components are equally important and crucial to the function of clearing the windshield. A wiper system like any system suffers from common problems. In your case the problem is with the wiper assembly. The motor, wiper drive mechanism and wiper arms are all attached to it. When activated a wiper motor rotates continuously and more sophisticated motors rotate left to right.
The challenge is to transform rotational movement of the wiper motor into lateral movement of the wipers blades. The drive mechanism does this using link rods from the motor to the wiper arms.
That info allows us guess that most likely one of the link rods have come loose. Your wiper mechanism may have more than one link rod. Usually, the link rod from the wiper motor to the wiper arm drive mechanism is the one that fails. The mechanism is basically a collection of link rods with usually plastic socket bushings at either end. The rods push fit onto ball fitting of the motor and wiper spindles.
The link rods function is to transfer the motor movement to the wiper blades and seems to be the weakest link in most wiper system assemblies. The most common reason for the link rod jumping off is wear and tear on the link rod plastic bushing.
Other reasons include:. Wear and tear: Link rods are attached to the wiper motor and also to the wiper spindles. They are attached by a bushing, commonly a plastic socket on the link rod, a metal ball on the motor and wiper spindle. The plastic bushing simply wears out and refitting it may work for a while but eventually will need to be replaced.
Heavy Snow: Turning on the wipers to clear heavy snow will cause excess pressure on the link arm bushings. Frozen wipers: When wipers are stuck to the windshield solid, turning them on as you can imagine just like packed snow, causes huge pressure on the plastic rod link bushings.
Wrong wiper blades: Wiper blades that are too long can catch in each other and also ride over the window edge which will load up the link rods. Wiper timing off: Wipers over lap as you know, but over time as the mechanism wears, the timing goes out. This can cause the wipers to catch in extreme weather conditions. Worn spindle: The spindles are what the wiper arms are fixed to. They work hard and can bind as they get older. The binding can cause the link rods to pop off.
Dry windshield: Running the wipers on a dry windshield can cause the links to jump off, but the real problem is as you know a worn out link rod socket bushing. On some cars, you can reach under the scuttle panel and snap the rod back into place. But most will be a little more work, especially higher end models. Pop the hood and check access to the wiper assembly. Some cars will require removing the wiper arms and on others, the scuttle panels can be wedged open just enough to get the job done.

When you connect up to the valve in the cab the motor goes to the end of its stroke and will not return. I can hear the valve in the motor click but the air only is pressurized at one end. Is the valve in the cab supposed to somehow divert the air from one side of the motor to the other? Brian if you found oil Any valve is a good idea to clean. Is your compressor pumping out oil?
The radiator is out of the truck so I have been charging the truck off my air compressor. It doesn't appear that the air compressor is pushing oil. I think the truck has been sitting quite a while. Mud wasp nests everywhere. I have had to replace all the brake valves due to the rubber deteriorating. I hesitated to pull the wiper switch not knowing what is inside for seals. Does anyone make a rebuilding kit for it? Can you get seals for the wiper motor also?

I pulled mine apart and got all the gunk out of the motor itself. There is a "toggle" valve built into the motor that flips the air from side to side. The one end cap on the motor has the gizmo inside and likely you'll have to pull it apart to check it. If you get it to one side can you "park" it turn the control valve on dash and make it return? Make sure all four lines are in great shape as one of mine was about closed shut and it ran really slow.Food safe grow trays
Once I fix that, they run like a raped ape. If the motor had lots of oil in it, the lines can swell shut like mine did. I found out 9 yrs ago with mine that their are a few differenct control knobs as Barry and I went round and round trying to get a matching unit to replace mine.
To no avail I just put a new O ring inside my dash control and it's been okay since. The O ring seals the shaft and there isn't much anything else to it.

The toggle in the motor is working. The wipers do not return to park with the switch. There is only line going to the motor which has air pressure. Does your wiper have 4 lines going to it?Early one morning my wipers decided not to work.
I can hear some noise like the motor is trying to work. I just replaced the motor and it still not working. I'm not sure if it is the switch that went bad. My question is how do I find out if it is the switch or not and if it is how do I go about replacing it. Do you. Check to see if there is power to the wiper motor. If there is, the switch is doing its job. I would then recommend that you remove the cowl at the base of the windshield and check the wiper linkage to make sure nothing has jamed.
Was this answer. Having your original wiper motor go bad, it may have shorted, and blown a fuse. Before over thinking, check and verify your fuses are good. The combination switch is a bit costly. Tightening the mounting bolts holding the wiper motor in place on the firewall, especially the one with the metal "ground strap" did the trick for me.
Lesson: checking the grounding on older vehicle electrical problems is probably a smart idea! Good answer, but that's not the full solution. That brass strap has arced away under the bushing the bolt goes through.
Continued arcing will make the problem occur again. The permanent solution is to find a bolt on the motor or mounting plate where a ground wire can be attached. Connect the other end of the wire to a paint-free point on the body.
Use nothing smaller than 12 gauge wire. If there is no bolt to loosen, drill a small hole in the mounting plate, then run in a self-tapping screw, or you can drill out one of the five rivets on the motor's switch plate, and replace it with a screw. So, send me an e-mail with your response to my questions and a second one with a link whereas, that e-mail contained no information for my questions. Circuit breaker two is in fuse panel however there can be a couple of other things wrong with this, the multi function switch on steering column or the wiper control module under dash to right of steering column. The switch grounds out the motor to complete the circuit but goes through module.
